About 1900 W. J. Macoun at the Dominion Experimental Farm in Ottawa started making selections from Sparksƒ?? Earliana, mainly for early maturity and heavy yield. This selection was carried on for about 10 years and resulted in Alacrity, the first tomato cultivar named in Canada. It produces medium to large red fruits and is mid-season in maturity.
