Savory Winter - Plant
6431- Winter Savory. Satureja montana
Perennial (hardy in zones 5-8)
A evergreen shrub that can be easily overlooked in the culinary realm, although it should certainly have a place in any kitchen garden! Adds a delicious peppery, pungent flavour to soups salads and meat dishes. Can be used topically to soothe insect stings. As its name suggests, this perennial variety is hardier than its annual relative, summer savoury. Produces charming white flowers, in contrast to the pink flowers of the summer savoury. Plant in well drained alkaline soil in a sunny spot (will tolerate part shade). Makes a great border and edging plant. Prune in early spring to encourage robust growth. Ht 16 inches.
