Solanum aethiopicum. Round, deep orange-red fruit resembling a tomato with flesh similar to other eggplants. Its flavour is slightly piquant and bitter, combining notes of eggplant, tomato and pepper. Traditionally used in caponata, preserved or pickled or stored in olive oil. Popular in Potenza. Brought from Ethiopia to Rotonda prior to World War II.
