Spinach New Zealand
3218- Tetragonia Expansa
New Zealand spinach is a different plant altogether from traditional spinach. Valuable for culture in hot, dry weather. Produces an abundance of fleshy, green leaves which can be picked throughout the season. Plants may grow up to 3ft in size. Seed April-May. Germinates slowly. 50 days
To hasten the seeds' slow germination, soak in water for a day prior to sowing. Soaking is not necessary, but it is recommended. Tetragonia is frost sensitive, so delay sowing until after the last spring frost. Sow seeds directly, 8" apart, covering 1/2". The plant will tolerate hot weather.
